If salvation and help are to come, it is from the child, for the child is the constructor of man and so of society. The child is endowed with an inner power, which can guide us to a more enlightened future.

—Dr. Maria Montessori

An integral component of Keystone’s curriculum is to empower our students to become agents of change. We strive to create global citizens through service to the larger community. Keystone promotes the development of empathy and cultural awareness while giving students a sense of belonging.

Montessori education includes a strong focus on peace education. Community service fits squarely within this work and begins with the question, “How can I help?” Keystone students are free to identify and develop their personal talents, abilities, and interests. They are encouraged to use them to meet the needs of others. A part of this process is self-reflection, an awareness of the needs of each student, education about those needs, an understanding of how actions can make a difference, and a willingness to extend oneself in service.

Community Service at Keystone starts at the earliest age and deepens in scope and formality as our students grow. Our toddlers learn to be of service to each other within their classroom, the Children’s House students gain an understanding of their world and other cultures while preparing for their annual Peace Program, and the elementary and adolescent students perform acts of service in our classrooms, within the Keystone family, and in our local, national, and global communities.

Dr. Maria Montessori believed that children hold the key to a peaceful future. At Keystone, we hold that belief in high regard. It helps to guide our decisions, impacts the relationships we foster within the classrooms, and leads all of us to serve the greater community. As we begin the last months of the 2024/25 school year, we will continue to support our students as they develop into global citizens and leave a legacy that will impact us all.

Within the child, lies the fate of the future.
-Dr. Maria Montessori
